Peeling Back the Layers: Overcoming Wallpaper Woes
May 1, 2023 - Michelle Murphy
In my opinion, the world is made up of two kinds of people:
Wallpaper lovers and wallpaper haters.
When it comes to home decor, wallpaper sometimes gets a bad rap. Even mentioning the word “wallpaper” can conjure up images of outdated floral patterns, peeling edges, and musty old rooms.
But let’s not be too quick to dismiss wallpaper as a relic of a bygone era!
Today, there are countless wallpaper designs to choose from that are not only stylish, but can also add depth, texture, and personality to any space.
Let’s peel back the layers and take a closer look at wallpaper, shall we?
Why Wallpaper?
Sure, we all know that an accent wall can really make a statement in a living room or bedroom, but did you know that you can also use wallpaper in unexpected places like bathrooms, dining rooms, and even hallways?
Different patterns, colours, and textures can create different moods and atmospheres, so don’t be afraid to experiment and have fun with them.

How to Use Wallpaper
Time for the nitty-gritty. Application.
The key here is preparation - make sure your walls are clean, smooth, and free of any imperfections before you start. Once you’ve got that down, it’s time to start hanging.
Here’s a quick step-by-step guide:
-
Measure the wall and cut the wallpaper accordingly
-
Apply wallpaper paste (if using roll/paste wallpaper)
-
Align the wallpaper with the top of the wall and smooth out any air bubbles or wrinkles
-
If needed, continue this process until the wall is covered, ensuring you are lining up the design/pattern as you go
-
Trim any excess wallpaper at the top and bottom of the wall
It’s really not as scary as it sounds, I promise! And if you need to trim around obstacles like windows or electrical outlets, just remember to take your time and be patient.
Wallpaper Types
Finally, let’s talk about the different types of wallpaper available. There are two main types: traditional and removable.
Traditional Wallpaper (aka ‘Paste’)
Traditional wallpaper requires wallpaper paste to be applied to the back of the wallpaper before hanging and tends to be quite durable and long-lasting.
Removable Wallpaper (aka ‘Peel & Stick’)
Removable wallpaper has a self-adhesive backing and can be easily removed without damaging the wall. This makes it a great option for renters or for those who like to switch up their decor frequently.
Of course, there are pros and cons to each type of wallpaper. Traditional wallpaper typically has more design options but can be difficult to remove. Alternatively, removable wallpaper is easy to apply and remove, but may not last as long and has limited design options.
It all comes down to what works best for your needs and preferences.
Are You Team Yay or Nay?
Whether you love it or hate it, there’s no denying that the cool wallpapers of today show great potential when it comes to sprucing up a space. It may have a reputation for being outdated or difficult to work with, but with so many modern designs and practical application methods available, wallpaper might be worth considering!
From adding a pop of colour to creating a bold accent wall, wallpaper has the power to transform a room and make it uniquely yours.
So don’t be afraid to give it a try - who knows, you may just fall in love with the endless possibilities that wallpaper has to offer!
