Style Highlight: Art Deco Design

October 7, 2024 - Michelle Murphy

Glitz. Glamour. Gatsby. That’s what should come to mind when you think of Art Deco design. Born over a century ago, Art Deco is still turning heads with its luxurious, “finer things” vibe.

Today, we’re going back in time to explore all things Art Deco interior design—where it came from, what makes it so grand, and how you can bring a bit of its Jazz Age cool into your own space.

(Virtual) martini cheers. Let’s get into it.

The Origins of Art Deco Design

Picture Paris, 1925. The International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts kicks off, and with it, Art Deco (short for Arts Décoratifs) makes its big debut. It wasn’t called Art Deco then though — that name came later. At that time, it was dubbed “le style moderne” or “Jazz Moderne”, and was influenced by a little bit of everything, including:

By the 1930s, Art Deco had gone global, leaving its mark on architecture, fashion, and interiors in America and beyond. Its initial reign wasn’t long, as World War II made way for the modernist movement that eventually stole the spotlight. But, as we all know, true style never really dies. It just waits patiently for its comeback.

Key Elements of Art Deco Design

Art Deco is all in the details. Here’s what to look for:

Geometry is King

Zigzags, chevrons, sunbursts. If it’s a bold, geometric shape, Art Deco loves it. These patterns show up everywhere, from furniture to wallpaper.

Luxe Materials

Art Deco doesn’t do subtle or low-grade. This design incorporates quality shiny chrome, sleek glass, and exotic woods like ebony or zebrawood. Bonus points for lacquered finishes.

Bold Colours

While black and white are Art Deco staples, the style definitely isn’t afraid of colour. Deep blues, vibrant yellows, and rich reds all have a place.

Lighting is Art

In Art Deco, lights are functional showpieces with frosted glass, geometric shapes, and materials like brass or chrome.

Streamlined Art Deco Furniture

Clean lines and symmetry are the name of the game in the Art Deco furniture department. It opts for pieces like club chairs with curved arms, sleek, low-slung sofas, and mirrored or glass-topped tables.

Art Deco’s objective is to make an impact. Maximalism is the same. Learn about Maximalism’s “more is more” attitude in this Style Highlight.

Can You Combine Art Deco with Other Design Styles?

Despite its overtly lavish front, Art Deco design can play really nice with other styles. But a few Art Deco accessories can go a long way!

Here are some subtle ways to blend Art Deco with other popular interior design styles.

Art Deco + Modern Minimalism

Keep the clean lines of Minimalism but add Art Deco flair with a statement piece, like an Art Deco wallpaper accent wall. A geometric pattern in muted tones can add interest without overwhelming a minimalist space.

Art Deco + Mid-Century Modern

Both of these styles love their curves, so they’re natural friends. Try pairing a classic Mid-Century sofa with Art Deco-inspired side tables or lamps.

Art Deco + Contemporary

Add Art Deco-inspired artwork to a contemporary room for an instant glam focal point in an otherwise understated space.

Art Deco + Transitional

Use Art Deco patterns in neutral colours to add subtle texture to a transitional room. Try a sunburst mirror or a bold Art Deco wallpaper pattern behind a simple, transitional furniture piece.

The Design of the Roaring Twenties Lives On!

A century later, and we’re still not over it. Why? Because Art Deco design has staying power. It makes a statement by standing out as something special.

If you’re into this design style, don’t think you have to go full Gatsby to get the look. Start small with an Art Deco-inspired lamp or a patch of geometric wallpaper and see how it feels.
