Downtown Accessible Condo Renovation

A cozy, inviting home built to function for you! This downtown condo was in need of some updates to offer accessibility to a full time wheelchair user. Luckily the condo already had some nice features including an elevator in the building, wide doorways and good flow throughout the apartment. With the help of Shift Accessibility Contractors we brought this client's dream to life!

Warm and inviting, this dining room was fun to tackle! A major struggle for this client was storage. Their condo has a small galley kitchen which doesn't allow for a lot of storage our counter space...so we added both! This custom dining room built in offers tons of storage, a lower accessible countertop and even some floating shelves above to display the client's art. A custom flip top counter/table was added as an extension to the kitchen and a lovely spot for morning coffees or quick lunches. We ticked a lot of boxes with this one!

In the kitchen, we needed to make a few cost effective changes that would have a big impact on everyday function. A new backsplash, countertop and sink were some aesthetic bonuses, but the real game changers were the roll under sink and the motion activated faucet. The client can now work in the kitchen on her own and access what she needs to to feel comfortable.

The living room was another place that needed storage and a cozy vibe. Custom built-ins were made to house the client's books, TV area and even a unique art desk, fit for a queen! The plentiful storage in the warm walnut with black accents played into their modern industrial vibe. The unique, custom pull out art desk allowed for a compact solution that was still accessible for the client to use on her own. Fitting in nicely with the design of the overall built-in, function was key, but form is certainly not lacking!

The big reason we were brought onto this job was for the primary bathroom. It was not accessible at all for the client and she wanted to work towards independence in her home. We maximized the space by taking over the walk through closet, allowing for a larger roll under vanity, loads of closet storage and a spacious bathroom. We created a roll in shower with large niche, handheld shower and backing for future grab bars. Not only did we create an accessible space for her to work on gaining some freedom, but we also brought in the cool, coastal ambiance she was after.
